Around 30 000 hotel rooms will be occupied during the 59 matches while domestic flight between the host cities will probably be overbooked. South Africa will be one of the few countries where tourism is not in the doldrums in 2009.
Together with the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup which kicks off in SA in mid-June this year, the IPL Cricket constitutes a fantastic dress rehearsal for the FIFA 2010 World Cup. It gives South Africans an opportunity to test the accommodation arrangements, airports, public transport as well as the often criticized safety and security aspects of hosting such large sports events. But IPL's Lalit Modi said that the Indians had complete confidence in the security situation in SA. England was considered as a possible venue but its unpredictable weather made South Africa the obvious choice. The first cricket test played between India and England, during December 11 and 15 in the Chepauk Cricket Ground, Chennai, was unique and historic in many respects. It restored the pride and interest in the sagging test cricket as evidenced by the large turnout of 30,000 people on the fifth day of the test.

The test was unique and historic because India won the test by unbelievably chasing a fourth innings target of 387 runs by losing only four wickets in the process and won the first test by six wickets. Only the day before yesterday, the Australian sports columnist Peter Roebuck wrote in his article, published in Hindu, that M. S. Dhoni's Indian team has the right balance to claim the number one spot in the world. Within hours after the publication of the article Indian cricket team has made history by winning the first test against England.

The test was dominated by England for the first three days and India snatched the victory from the jaws of defeat in the last two days. England made a reasonably good total of 316 runs in the first innings helped by the 13 th test century by the England opener Andrew Straus. In reply India managed to score only 241 runs, the main contributors being the skipper M. S. Dhoni with 52 runs and Harbajan Singh, the ace offspinner with 40 runs. It is needless to say that both openers Sehwag and Gambhir, the great wall Dravid, the little master from Mumbai, very very special Laxman all failed to score in the first innings. Then England played its second innings and declared it at 311/9, with fine contributions from Andrew Straus and Paul Collingwood , each scoring 108 runs. Thanks to a fine bowling performance of Zakir Khan and Ishant Sharma, who scalped 6 wickets among them and restricted England to 311 for 9.

England having already gained a first innings lead of 75 runs over India, set an improbable target of 387 runs for India to chase in the second innings. It was a wearing pitch with bowlers getting occasional bounce and England spinners Swan and Monte Panesar were on song and appeared to dominate and threaten in the last day. Media had already written off the first test in favour of England as if they had strongly been in the driver's seat and poised to win the test.

It was the fourth day of the test. England skipper Kevin Peterson declared the England second innings at 311 for 9, setting a target of 387. The Indian openers came to play. It all started when the swashbuckling Indian opener Virendar Sehwag set the tone and momentum of chase by scoring a quickfire 83 runs of 68 balls with 11 fours and 4 sixes. His innings instilled the requisite enthusiasm and confidence among the Indian players and made them believe that they could make the run chase and the target was achievable. Viru's opening partner Gambhir continued the momentum and scored a decent 66. Then came the historical run chase and entertaining partnership between the little master Sachin Tendulkar and the Yuvaraj Singh, while the former scoring his skillful 41 century (103 not out) and the latter scoring a brisk 85 by giving an able and adequate support to Sachin.

By chasing 387 runs in the fourth innings, India won the first test by six wickets and is one up in the two test series. The run chase was made possible when the Indian players believed in themselves. It was Virendar Sehwag who won the man of the match award for his quickfire 83 but the credit of making a successful run chase should go to all Indian players like Sehwag, Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvaraj Singh. A day of history. A day that will never be forgotten. The day that Nelson Mandela was released from prison. That day South Africa was on everybody's tongues. History was rewritten on that specific day (not good with dates so sue me for not remembering the exact date but the images are still fresh).

Nelson Mandela walked unto the world scene in a big way. A man of honour and dignity, a man with a heart for the people. This man had all the reasons to hate and to blame, but instead, he came along and started to built a beautiful future for South Africa.

No Bush or Clinton, no Queen or Prince on this earth did more to try and unify, not only South Africa but the world.

Some South Africans, for political reasons, tried to "hate" (more dislike) him but he made it so difficult. Even at the ripe age of 90, closer to 91 (18 July 2009), he is still the statesman of the world and father to South Africans. The man who made long sleeve shirts fashionable in South Africa and brought us a distinctive dance; the Madiba jive.

Madiba, united us wherever he went. In 1995 the country watched the rugby world cup as a unit and rejoiced together in the streets when the Springboks (South Africa) won. He brought us the Madiba magic on the sports fields of the world. I was never big on soccer but that feeling of unity made me watch that historical game in 1996 when South Africa (Bafana Bafana) won the African Cup of Nations.

One day he will be gone (that day South Africa and the world will come to a stand still) but he will never be GONE. Obama, you've got some ruling to do.

Danny Jordaan, you made us very proud. I wish I could describe the feeling of warmth, joy and pride that I had and still have in Afrikaans, my language, when they announced South Africa as the successful bidder of the 2010 Soccer World Cup. I believe that God is on our side as South Africans. You did a great job and I know that you still have sleepless nights but see every difficulty as a challenge to prove to the world that we have arrived big time. When I saw on the news that the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is almost ready, it was the confirmation that everything is on track.

You deserve a one year paid holiday after the world cup. I will have to speak to the next president of the country, Reverend Kenneth Meshoe, to see to it.

Bafana Bafana, now it is your time to shine. You showed us in 1996 that you are a force to recon with. Okay, there was a long and very worrying slump but you have restored our hope. Just play it game by game and put South Africa first. Well Rev Meshoe can't give you a years holiday when you win because the Premier Soccer League and FIFA will fight him tooth and nail, but I know that you will receive very big bonuses.

No pressure? Yes no pressure, can't help to dream. Just go out there and make us proud.
With the Confederations Cup coming up in a few months, you have the chance to play against the big guns of soccer. Use your opportunity well.

The only problem that I have with the 2010 soccer world cup is the fact that we as a nation asked God, on a big stadium, to give us favour with the bidding but never thanked Him in the same way when we were announced the winners. I hope we can correct that soon. South Africa will be blessed even more when we bless God.

Migraines

This morning as I watched Morning Live, a two hour news and actuality show, I just new that we are a nation to be reckoned with. When I switched on the TV, Leanne was talking to a professor about migraines and the breakthrough surgical procedure that is performed in South Africa. Apparently people are flying in from different continents to have this procedure done.

Let me do two possible ads.
1."South Africa, we take away your headaches. Book your flight now, you'll never take another headache tablet again."
2."Is your husband giving you a splitting headache, fly to the land of sea, sunshine, wildlife, luxury accommodation, friendly people and Evita's Party. We will take away your headache and give you a new husband. Men, you can have the same experience."

Hearts

Years back, when I was still a little boy we gave the world Doctor Chris Barnard, the heart surgeon. He performed the very first heart transplant in the Grootte Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.

What a breakthrough. It is still a mystery and a miracle to me. We thank God for giving us the wisdom and knowledge to be able to performs such wonders.

Need a new life? South Africa will not just give you a new life but also a new heart. Having joked about it, I can also see the spiritual significance of a new heart. So many times people would say you need a change of heart that it somehow lost its power. Forgive me, when I think about something I've got to say it. I'm no writer with a flow of ideas. I'm just Steven D, who sees and says.

People of the world, don't we all need a new heart? Are we not tired of wars, hatred and tyranny? Our hearts need to return to its Maker.

Rugby

Twice the world cup champions. The Springboks is our proud export. England, Australia, New Zeeland, France and others, do you envy us? Please don't answer me, I might regret asking that question.

Under the spell of the Madiba magic we won the world cup in 1995 and twelve years later we did it again. I know America and some other countries are not known for their rugby, but they've got other sporting codes that excel in.

So, if you are in one of those countries and you want to experience the rugby "gees" (spirit) than Newlands in Cape Town or Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria is the place to be.

Peter De Villiers, coach those boys, the next world cup is round the corner. You've got two years.

Proteas (South African National Cricket Team) you made us proud. Why are the Aussies so quiet. We want you to come and visit our country and experience our hospitality but we're not sure how to offer that without a smirk. Please, we've got nothing against the Aussies, it is just on the cricket field that we know that we're encountering our biggest enemy.

When you visit South Africa for the second leg of the cricket tour, we will be on our best behaviour except when Ponting hits a six. Don't expect to hear any cheers when that happens. Off the sports field we will give you all our love.

Having said all of that, remember, we are gunning for the number 1 spot in the test arena as well. Bring your flags and kangaroos but don't ask for mercy, your not going to get that.

This week the SA open tennis tournament returned with a bang. We've got some of the world's best golf courses. Surfing is big in South Africa. We had our share of world champions in the boxing world. Do you have all of that in your country?

However, India lost the test series to Sri Lanka by 2-1 and performing badly in an unprecedented manner in the ODIs, having already lost the first ODI by eight wickets.

Cricket lovers or critics of the Indian team may not take Indias' poor performance lightly. It seems that the Indian team has been proving the prophecy of Javed Mianded. He opined that when Indian team had been performing well with the domestic coaches of both bowling and fielding in Venkatesh Prasad and Robin Singh, India rather needlessly had appointed a foreign coach, Gary Kirsten and thereby India would have a nosedive in its performance in the near future. It seems that Gary Kirsten is unimpressive as a coach and given the current performance of the Indian Team he may not complete his full term as a coach.

The four Indian players like Sachin, Dravid, Saurav and VVS.Laxman are in their mid 30s, all of them 33 or 34 plus, have lost their form, only showing some glimpses of their class as did by Sachin and VVS. Laxman in the second test or by Dravid and Laxman in the lost third test. It is alleged that all the four players are currently in a poor form, an enigma in cricket. But it is hard to believe that all the four world class players have lost their form simultaneously. Giving them due credit to their contributions to Indian cricket whether it be Sachin or Dravid or Saurav or VVS. Laxman, they should be replaced by the youngsters waiting in, instead of harping on their past glory or past achievements. One should not forget Virendar Sehwag won the second test for India through his double century in the first innings and again with a useful 50 in the second innings. But all the four famed players did not play any long innings and made any impression with their performance.

India did not have any new bowling option except to persist with Kumble and Harbajan Singh, while Ishant Sharma offering some solace. On the other hand Sri Lanka had new bowling options in Mendis along with old wily Muralidharan, the world's highest wicket taker. India could not come to terms with their bowling especially Mendis who went on to win the man of the series award in the tests. Almost all the Sri Lankan players are currently in good form that played a vital part in the series.

Of late, Indian team is more used to playing medium pace and fast bowling than the spin bowling. It was a decisive factor in the series. The pitches in Sri Lanka were tailor made to suit their own players especially the spinners. Even in the first ODI, both Mendis and Mutthaiyah Muralidharan, scalped three wickets each.

Given the current form of the Sri Lankan and the Indian teams and playing conditions which are more suitable to the former, one need not get surprised or overwhelmed if Sri Lanka win the ODI series also. Already they are leading by 1-0.Virendar Sehwag, the dashing Indian opener, has returned to India due to injury. Sachin Tendulkar, the best one day player in the Indian team, suffering from injury problems, has been replaced by a new comer from Tamil Nadu.

Therefore, it is time for introspection as well as timely action to revamp the Indian cricket team to raise it from its doldrums.
